English 原文
Three flat river stones, a palm-sized fulcrum pebble, and a slim dark shard rolled together across the gravel when Griffon shifted his weight beside the wind-exposed waterline. Knees bent, he felt the coarse surface bite through his soles as he braced, lifting the shard between thumb and forefinger. He balanced it on the fulcrum; the shard rocked once, then steadied like a quiet lever waiting for load. Warm air brushed his forearms, and the dry-dust scent from the stone pile lingered around him. He had already stacked three layers, each placement stretching his calves and tightening the muscles along his back. The tower now reached chest height; one more layer promised the tallest column in the cluster, and the clear utility of the shard tempted him to continue.
He crouched lower, searching for a counterstone among half-submerged pieces at the waterline. Cold water numbed his fingertips, and the slick surface of aquatic plants draped over one candidate stone made it slide from his grip. Straightening, he felt a mild strain in his thighs and chose a broader piece instead. A loud splash cracked the rhythm; downstream, Thea’s skipping stone jumped three times and plunged, sending rings racing toward his ankles. Griffon glanced over and stepped back to avoid the ripples. During that brief turn, sunlight struck the dark shard left leaning against the tower. Heat built; air beside the shard rose in a thin shimmer and gave the lever a gentle push. The shard tilted, nudging the upper two stones off centre.
Griffon spun as gravel rattled. The top stones slid, bumped the layer below, and dropped into his open palm before they could scatter further. He felt their weight jolt through his wrist, yet the tower’s core swayed only once. Warm air still drifted upward from the sun-soaked shard, trying to pry the structure apart. He answered by easing a fresh wet stone onto the opposite side, letting its cool mass counter the lift. The column steadied with a faint creak, the shard now fixed at a slight angle—an unplanned record of rising heat. Upstream, a heron lifted one leg and glided forward, sending new ripples glistening toward the gravel bank.
