Xavier swung the iron windlass handle once, then let it hang and hurried down the perforated steps toward the keeper’s log room, the rings of each tread chiming under his boots. He wanted hot tea before helping his parent read last week’s barometer notes, so he balanced a squat metal kettle on the small spirit stove near the desk. The kettle already held a little water, yet he poured more until the rim gleamed, pressed the lid tight, and, thinking the draft might cool it too fast, wrapped a folded blanket around the pot; the thick cloth formed a quick cuddle of insulation.

By the time the water simmered, the stove’s heat had filled the narrow room. Steam slipped from the spout, met the colder iron grating above, and turned into a curtain of droplets that pattered down through the holes. One drop struck the oily brass drum on the mechanism floor below. The drum had been polished earlier, so the bead skated over its surface, lifting a thin film of oil against the cable. The extra slickness removed the faint rasp that had echoed each time the kinked section passed; without that small scratchy cue, Xavier’s classmate on the gallery might mis-time their beam measurements. A second later, another bead followed, and the cable twitched; the heavy iron weight hesitated, then slid forward a heartbeat late, making the entire structure issue a low metallic groan like a slow bell.

Xavier had already added water, a lid, and the blanket; a smaller change now felt wiser. He peeled the lid away, letting a white plume rise freely, and folded the blanket off to one side. Cool air from the stone stairwell rushed across the open doorway, the plume thinned, and the drip-rain above faded. The cable’s rhythm evened, the drum ticked true, and the weight resumed its steady descent. On the brass lip near the shaft, a single bright bead of condensation slid across the thin oil sheen, rolling toward the drain slot.
