English 原文
The fluorescent tube above the mailbox row blinked twice, paused, then repeated the cadence, but the stretch of corridor beyond stood in unbroken shadow. Raine paused on the stairwell landing, basket balanced against her hip, while that harsh glare drew a neat pattern across the metal handrail. The rhythmic flashes met the fixed darkness below, producing a brief cognitive dissonance, as if two pictures overlapped without matching corners. She climbed higher; each step rose from dimness into a momentary blade of light before sinking back again. On the third flight a window admitted weak exterior glow that outlined drifting dust. A slight fluctuation in that glow hinted at wind on the roof, and the promise of quicker drying carried her upward.
The rooftop door swung inward, releasing a slab of afternoon brightness that spilled across cracked shingles near the threshold. Raine set the basket down and slid sheets toward the pulley rope. Several hangers already clustered at one point; when she tugged, the rope moved a finger’s width and stopped. The wheel behind the guide rail refused to turn, its shadow sharp against the wall. Shorter pulls lifted fine grit but no further travel. Leaning closer, she noticed the peculiarity: a loose shingle shard had wedged itself between wheel and frame. If she had kept pulling, the rope would have frayed against that edge and cut clean through. She knelt, teased the shard free, and watched the crowded hangers glide apart under their own weight. The breeze still teased the line, so her eyes traced the solid balcony railing bathed in steady light.
Instead of fighting the rope again, Raine lifted one damp pillowcase and draped it over the railing where the brightness fell strongest. Water darkened the concrete below, and the cloth itself lightened as air passed through. She spread more pieces, pacing the span in even steps until the basket lay empty. Behind her, the pulley wheel hung slack, silent under the unmoving line. Raine pressed the loosened wheel between thumb and forefinger, and its faint metallic warmth clung to her skin.
