"Pass the tray."

Ilsa slid the shallow nursery dish across the dry top of the bank. The air carried a warm, earthy tang, like cooked grain mixed with iron filings, and it drifted around Pierce as he took the dish. An odor rose from the seedling roots; they felt papery, begging for water. He had grouped each bundle as a tuple of ten stalks, the thin blades quivering as a frog croaked nearby. Ahead, a ribbon-thin seam had opened on the sun-baked ridge, the crack smelling of fresh clay where deeper mud stayed cool. Pierce aimed to reach the pool, lower the tray, and let water transform the brittle roots into supple threads again. He shifted forward, but the crusted surface crumbled beneath his heel; a sour puff of drying mud burst upward, and his foot slid sideways, forcing him to spread his arms to keep the tray level.

While he balanced, warm surface water seeped through the crack, trickling into the hollow below the ridge. The sudden flow released a metallic swamp smell that mingled with the grassy odor, then spread across the bank and turned crumbs of clay into slick paste. His next step met this film; again the bank resisted, and again he adjusted, planting his foot flatter and leaning the tray against his hip. The wooden sluice gate in the corner, which had been fitted by a carpenter last spring, kept the level steady, yet the leak kept widening. Ilsa knelt beside the fracture, scooped a fistful of cool mud, and pressed it firmly along the gap. The paste clung, blocking the warm trickle and ending the slide. Pierce lowered the tray; water swirled around the roots, releasing a fresh, flourlike scent. A tiny snail shell drifted free from patched mud and spiralled toward seedlings.
