English 原文
"Pass the brush," Tara whispered.
The wooden handle pressed into her palm, warm from early sun and lightly gritty with chalk dust. Inside grid square B3, the shallow pit offered brief solitude before other students reached their numbered stakes. Each sideways sweep formed a displacement pattern across the chalk and revealed darker flecks beneath the powder. She switched to the trowel; every tap sent a displacement leap of white crumbs onto her knees. Much of the layer had been compacted by last year’s rain, so the blade skimmed instead of sliding in. Then the metal struck a smooth lump and froze; the sudden displacement slid loose crumbs across the grid. Dry afternoon air carried a faint chalk taste that tingled on her tongue whenever she leaned even closer. A quick mist darkened the spot, yet the shadowed curve faded again once the surface dried, and her first plan had failed.
Reed in square B4 noticed her pause and stepped over the border with his magnifying lens. The metal rim cooled Tara’s thumb as they angled the lens and exposed ridges ordinary stone lacks. Reed braced the chalk wall while Tara traced the edge, and crusty flakes dropped into her tray. A nightingale darted from the hedge, skimmed the pit, and landed beside their drying sample. Its beak flipped the fragment; it struck the spoil heap and cracked, revealing plain flint rather than bone. The fluttering pause let moisture vanish from Tara’s square, so chalk turned powdery and the hidden outline brightened. She eased out a palm-sized shell, surface smooth yet marked by fine growth rings that had been protected in stone. The brush that had been pale white now showed a grey band across its bristles. Tara laid it on the canvas roll, and pale dust drifted above square B3.
