Shade Over a Fragile Spiral-

English 原文
Niall’s brush swept across grid square C3, leaving half the curved ridge exposed while the untouched chalk beside it stayed pale and dusty. The air around his knees carried a dry mineral whiff, like crushed blackboard sticks under summer heat. He hoped to turn the slow work into a daring adventure, yet the crust above the fossil felt tougher than bread left too long in the oven. Earlier, he had labelled the square and tucked the note under a shiny paperclip on his clipboard; now that same metal held a faint metallic tang close to his thumb. The educator had described the pit as a hands-on experience, so Niall tried the spray bottle. Cool mist spread, releasing a damp limestone smell, and darkened the ridge enough to show a shallow spiral. If the water stayed a moment longer, he could sketch the pattern.
Instead, the sun pressed down. Warm air licked the surface, the moisture vanished, and a thin crust formed almost at once. When Niall touched it, the crust split, and powder drifted into Palmer’s neighbouring square, where another misting was under way. Their two sprays met, and a small plume rose, tasting faintly of chalk and warm sand. The ticking alarm clock on the specimen bench marked the final five minutes before tool clean-up; its plastic case gave off a faint warmed-rubber scent each time the second hand jumped. Niall shifted tactics. He laid the clipboard sideways over the ridge, blocking the heat, and slid the paperclip to grip the board’s edge like a tiny hinge. In the shade, the damp line lingered; he traced around it with the plastic dental pick, each scrape releasing a softer, cooler chalk smell. Powder still floated between the two squares, but the shaded patch stayed dark long enough for a quick outline. A faint mineral scent drifted upward, curling over the clipboard’s rim.
