English 原文
The shallow oval pressed into the carpet under the bookshelf edge lay empty, its cardboard wall gone. Tess knelt, her knees dipping into the warm pile, and compared the dent’s width with a spare tube pinched between her hands. Axel crouched beside her, the glass marble warming in his fist; Opal, an adult, worked across the room, trimming fresh tubes on a folded canvas cloth. Coloured tape already formed a slender network of paths, yet the landing bowl still waited several arm-lengths away. Tess slid a long straight tube into the gap, easing its rim over the shelf lip, then wrapped violet tape twice around the joint. When Axel released the marble from shoulder height, it hummed down the new piece, crossed the first slope, and shuddered to a halt on a flat stretch before the turn.
Both children leaned forward, balance thrown off by the sudden stop. Tess wedged a square wooden block beneath the sagging tube, raising the middle by barely a finger’s breadth. Her mouth pressed into a thin line; she added a second, heavier block and smoothed another strip of tape over the seam. The turning point lost its tidy curve and spread into a clumsy angle. Their next trial sent the marble rattling, losing speed, then hopping clear of the track to bury itself in the carpet. Axel retrieved it, offering a sardonic half-grin at the growing tangle of repairs. He snapped a short elbow connector onto the bend, and tape, wood, and plastic now formed a bulky knot that looked anything but swift.
A brief reverie of silence followed while Opal’s scissors paused on the canvas. Tess traced the expected path through the air with one finger, then peeled away the very tube she had first inserted, tugging until the tape loosened and the cardboard slipped free. The gap produced a clean drop toward the bowl, and Axel removed the thicker block, leaving only the lighter one to support the bend. On the next release the marble zipped off the shelf, skimmed the curve, leapt the opening, and rang against the metal bowl without slowing. Tess nudged the bowl forward, deepening the existing dent in the warm carpet.
