Two earlier closing announcements had echoed along the sun-lit stacks when Lily nudged a rolling step-stool toward the tall reference shelf. Afternoon glare sliced between shelves, leaving alternating stripes of brightness and pooled darkness across the carpet. A heavy atlas—its faded cover stitched with coarse stitching that caught every shard of light—waited on the highest ledge. The book had been shelved there by mistake, and Lily wanted it before the next announcement. She climbed onto the stool, knees brushing the shelf, and stretched. Her fingertips only grazed the lower edge; the gap remained wider than a thumb. The stillness around her deepened, broken only by a tabby cat weaving beneath chairs near the reading table.

She stepped down, stacked a thick dictionary on the stool, and tried again. The extra height lifted her wrist level with the goal, yet her hand could just clutch the atlas’s corner without moving it. One more boost was needed. A slim encyclopaedia joined the dictionary; the combined platform tilted but held. Rising once more, Lily tugged. The atlas slid forward, tapped a row of paperback travel guides, and the guides toppled like slow dominoes. The last guide struck a charming box displayed as a bookend; the box skidded, threatened to drop, and its lacquered side flashed in the slanting brightness. Before the chain could spread, Lily pivoted the atlas sideways, jamming its spine against the leaning paperbacks. The motion absorbed the remaining force, and the list of guides froze midway, their edges hovering in a slanted line.

Lily exhaled, lowered the atlas onto the top of the stack beneath her feet, and climbed down to ground level. The tabby hopped onto the bottom shelf, sniffed the halted paperback row, then settled among the striped shadows. She returned the extra volumes to their places, sliding each one carefully so the paperbacks straightened again. The step-stool that had rolled freely a moment ago now carried the atlas across its cushioned top, and a single rubber wheel kept turning an inch at a time, drifting back toward the brightest band of carpet.

她退下來，把厚厚的字典墊在凳面，再次嘗試，但手只能抓到地圖冊一角，無法拉出。她又加上一冊薄百科全書，臨時高臺微微傾斜卻仍支撐得住。她第三次站上去用力一拉，地圖冊往前滑，撞到一排旅遊指南，書本像慢動作的多米諾骨牌依序傾倒。最後一本頂到作為書擋的精緻木盒，木盒在光中閃過一下便開始滑動，眼看就要墜落。莉莉立刻把地圖冊橫放，書脊頂住傾斜的指南列，鏈式動作就此中斷，紙背停在半空中成斜線。

她平穩呼氣，把地圖冊放到腳下那堆書上，再慢慢下到地面。虎斑貓跳上最下層書架，嗅了嗅停住的紙本，然後窩在條紋暗影裡。莉莉把墊書一一歸位，旅遊指南也隨之恢復直立。方才自由滑動的矮凳此刻頂著那本地圖冊，一個橡膠輪依舊以極緩慢的幅度轉動，逐寸滑回最明亮的地毯帶。
