"Blue marble, ready."

June placed the glass sphere on the launch shelf, its blue surface shimmered by honey-toned lamplight. Wade, seated at the supply pile, had been trimming new cardboard tubes with careful strokes, the scissors never leaving his hands. A middle ramp on the book-and-block platform sagged, stealing speed from every run. June slid the tube aside to uncover the gap, then wedged a thick ochre cookbook beneath it. The marble rolled, gained a moment of pace, yet stopped halfway along the straight-tube section. The extra height measured three centimetres; the threshold still lay beyond reach. A warm vanilla breath drifted from the candle above, and the carpet captured the faint rattle of the stalled marble.

June fetched a thinner paperback, its caramel cover glossy and slick, and eased it atop the cookbook. A fresh strip of tape restored cohesion between two trembling joints; the strip’s copper glint added visual intrigue to the zigzag course. She caught a brief glimpse of the marble’s shadow racing when she released it again, but the sphere slowed at the very last turn connector and halted, glass touching cardboard without sound. While June leaned closer, Oona the patterned cat padded over, tail brushing golden dust motes. The animal’s whiskers flicked at a small wooden ferryboat toy lying near the supply pile. One soft nudge sent the boat gliding across the warm carpet until it bumped her ankle.

June picked up the ferryboat, its flat deck exactly one centimetre tall. She slid it beneath the paperback, stacked bow facing forward, and let the final fragment of tape loop once around the tower. The moment the marble dropped, the combined lift pushed the ramp past its tipping point; the sphere shot through the straight section, curved, and rang against the landing bowl. The empty cardboard ring of the tape roll spun twice on the floor, then slowed beside the shining marble.

「藍色彈珠，準備好了。」

琥珀燈光下，June 把玻璃球放到書架邊的發射處，球面泛著淡淡光澤。Wade 坐在備品堆旁，用剪刀細心裁切新的紙管，剪刀始終沒有離手。書與木塊搭出的中段坡道微微下陷，每次都奪走彈珠的速度。June 把紙管輕移，露出縫隙，然後把一本厚厚的赭色食譜墊進去。彈珠滾動、加速，卻在直線段中途停下。多出的三公分仍不足以完成整條跑道。香草蠟燭的暖味飄過，地毯悶住彈珠微弱的碰撞聲。

June 又拿來一本較薄的平裝書，焦糖色封面光滑發亮，小心地放在食譜上。她撕下一段新膠帶，把兩節顫抖的接頭重新黏牢，閃著銅色的膠帶為曲折跑道添了新奇感。她再次放球，倏地瞥見彈珠影子飛過，但球在最後一個轉彎前減速，無聲停在紙管內。June 俯身查看時，花斑貓 Oona 輕輕走來，尾巴掃過金色塵埃。牠的鬚觸到備品堆旁的一艘木製渡船玩具，輕推一下，船滑過暖暖的地毯，碰到她的腳踝。

June 拿起渡船，平坦的甲板正好一公分高。她把它塞進平裝書底下，船頭朝前，再用最後一截膠帶繞柱固定。彈珠落下時，新增的高度讓坡道一舉超過臨界點，玻璃球衝過直線、轉彎，終於撞進收尾的碗裡。膠帶捲空心紙圈在地上轉了兩圈，慢慢停在閃亮的彈珠旁。
