English 原文
The chalk boundary between squares 12 and 13 had vanished, leaving a pale void across the bricks near Xavier's knees. He crouched lower, letting his fingertips trace the empty groove along the brick face just above the tarp. In that interim posture he noticed a neat rhythm of white specks on the wall. Every fourth brick carried one, like tiny numerical beats marching upward toward the sun-warmed row. Harriet, working the neighbouring red section, rolled fresh colour beside him; the roller's fibers flicked droplets that glittered before drying. Xavier dipped a wide brush into the shared green tray, rotating his wrist to measure how much paint clung to the bristles. The weight dragged his shoulder, yet he steadied his stance against the coarse wall and the rough mortar ridge. Warm air rose from the tarp, pressing through his thin soles and reminding him to keep shifting weight.
His first sweeping stroke erased the row of specks along the mortar line in one smooth glide. It also covered a thin ribbon of Harriet’s stray red, leaving a glossy green band that looked complete from arm’s length. He leaned back to observe the whole section from the edge of the tarp. A clear divide emerged; the earlier coat on the sun-lit upper bricks had already dried to a lighter shade. Fixing the boundary had created a colour mismatch, so one solution now strained the harmony of another. With the ladder occupied, he faced a narrow choice: repaint the high strip darker or thin the fresh band below. He dipped the brush again and scooped a palmful of water from a rinsing tub. Whisking liquid and paint together, he spread a paler wash that slid easily over the lower bricks. Green now ran evenly, yet faint red fibers peeked through, reminding him that compromise carried its own texture.
A lone droplet slipped toward the erased chalk line and stopped where the rhythm of specks had once lived. Xavier swiped it away with his thumb and felt only gritty brick beneath the paint film. The neat pattern he had trusted revealed itself as dried splatter from Harriet’s earlier roller pass. He grinned at the small trick of perception, amused by the wall’s silent joke. He pressed one final stroke across the midpoint, and cool shade drifted over his knuckles.
