English 原文
Wet algae released a peppery tang each time Noemi rolled a stone from the shallow water. She and Atlas planned a tower on an open stretch, two paces from the river. Their father read on a boulder, his pages whispering in the wind. The plan looked simple: raise three layers before the sun dipped. Nearby stones lay crooked or already in other piles, so they hurried to the waterline for supplies. Arms loaded with rounded slabs still slick from the river, they returned, droplets sliding over their knuckles. Strategy-A sounded clever: gather every piece first, then stack without more trips. Yet each ounce of lingering water coated the contact points, and the first layer slipped sideways as soon as Noemi lifted her hand. Atlas turned the base stone to catch a groove, but a delicate nuance in its underside sent the load tilting again, scattering gravel in a dry rasp.
A white swan suddenly beat its wings across the water, throwing a gust that struck the half-built tower. The upper stone rocked, caught the warm lift rising from the sun-soaked boulder, and toppled. While Atlas steadied the remaining layers, Noemi noticed vapor-thin threads where moisture on their spare stones began to evaporate; if that film dried, friction would return. They waited through three bursts of wind, matching placements to the pauses. At the third lull she chose a flatter disc, heavier by an extra ounce, wiped it clean, and lowered it without hurry. Atlas followed a heartbeat later with a capstone that had been buried beneath a dark loam layer farther up the bank. The two timed moves locked weight over weight, and neither breeze nor ripple shifted the tower again. Between the towers, thin waves now rolled at a slower pulse, tapping the gravel with a soft, even hush.
