English 原文
Harris slid a woven tray onto the granite rolling table and tipped softened leaves into a loose green mound. A cut-grass scent rose quickly, sharp as vinegar, yet the deeper floral note kept hiding. He spread his fingers and began the circular press, hoping warmth and weight would bruise the cells in steady rhythm. Cold stone resisted, and the leaves skated instead of folding; their edges turned brittle, breaking with a dry snap. Paloma, leaning from the pavilion walkway above, caught the fragments in her palm before they scattered downhill. The granite had been chilled by the night air, and Harris's judgment relied on heat he could not yet feel. After three slow circuits, only a faint trace of copper sweetness drifted upward, leaving him uncertain about the enzyme release. He had studied the circular motion earlier in the morning, but the stone’s temperature had changed since the sun climbed.
He adjusted his grasp, flattening both palms this time and drawing Paloma beside him, so their combined pressure covered the mound. Heat built slowly, releasing a metallic tang that mixed with damp hay odour, while juice slicked the stone under their circling hands. Yet the cloud shadow rolling across the terrace cooled the surface again, and the aroma thinned as quickly as steam from soup. Remembering that friction raised temperature, Harris shortened each circle, grinding the leaves in tighter loops until they glistened like wet olive skin. At last the air turned syrup-sweet, and the leaf veins darkened from jade to amber, showing enough change to move them downhill. Paloma gathered the warm pile into the bamboo tray, while Harris noted how his wrists carried a sticky sheen of tea juice. Dark streaks of viscous liquid traced looping arcs across the granite, a visible record of the morning’s silent negotiation.
