English 原文
Tok-tok, tok-tok rolled through the bamboo canopy before Keane set one boot on the pale gravel. He knew this path; last spring he had balanced a paper wind chime from a cross-pole and tuned the fallen culm bridge nearby. Today he returned with Gemma, who sketched sounds in a small notebook, hoping to accomplish two simple tasks: test whether the bridge still sang and check the condition of the fragile chime. Thin silver stripes of light slid over the culm’s steel-grey skin, and a new, sinuous scratch traced along its length. When his knuckles tapped the bamboo, the note had evolved into a deeper hum that blended in quiet harmony with distant knocking trunks. Wind paused. A single clean tone emerged, lower than he expected but steady, and Keane nodded once.
He wedged a smooth pebble beneath the bridge to keep it from rolling, then walked to the chime. The extra height of the lifted culm had stolen tension from the shared supporting twine; the chime now drooped, its translucent paper almost brushing damp earth. One drip would stain it. Keane frowned, squeezed the twine between finger and thumb, and slid the knot toward a thicker culm. The chime rose, safe, yet the bridge lost a breath of height and its tone dropped further. He crouched, pressed the pebble halfway back, and listened again. The bridge answered with a softer note, while the chime hung a finger’s width above the soil—neither perfect, both serviceable. Gemma whispered, “Wind coming,” and shuffled back to her page.
A cooler gust swept in. Leaf-edges rattled, and shifting stripes revealed a shallow groove under the bridge: a spiral worn by years of slow rolling, always hidden in shadow when the culm lay flat. Keane traced the groove’s curve; the pattern had always been here, quietly recording each small movement. He stepped onto the main path, letting new notes mix with old ones, and lifted a hand toward Gemma before turning toward the garden gate. On the bridge, a grey beetle climbed the pebble, paused on its shining top, and clicked its wings.
