Emory slid a fourth stone into the shallow brook, where three already formed a blue-grey line. Two matching slabs waited on the bank, their pale edges dry and flecked with silver-grey dust. Zara crouched beside him, rolling a loose sleeve above her wrist so it would not soak in the current. Their small brown dog stood behind her, nose low, ears flicking at every sudden splash. They had walked past the boardwalk because its planks looked slick, choosing instead to build this temporary chain of stones. The brook’s widest span measured three arm-lengths, and the gap still covered one full stretch.

Emory inched forward, planting the fifth slab with a hollow clack; water curled around its edges yet left a step-sized hole beyond. He straightened, wiped spray from his cheek, and glanced at the marker post whose arrow had been painted years earlier. Light shifted; the symbol plate now sat in shadow, so its direction remained a silent query. Zara breathed, "That stone sits flatter than the last one," her voice low above the water. Zara lifted the final stone together with him, both pairs of boots slipping a little on the gravel. They lowered it, nudging earlier slabs until their edges touched; the chain at last reached the far edge with a soft grind. For a breath, every slab settled, and the brook path snapped from almost-there to complete.

Emory placed one foot on the new stone, and its weight pressed the middle slab lower, loosening a pebble underneath. The pebble skated over the slab, dropped into the current, and bumped a twig that drifted toward a daffodil on the bank. Startled by the moving twig, the dog sprang, slipped on the wet edge, and stumbled against the marker post. The impact sent the metal plate spinning; its clatter echoed through the pine corridor until Zara reached out and caught its rim. Her fingers held the cool disk, yet it still quivered between her thumb and forefinger, humming over the finished stone path. She was steadying the plate as its painted arrow kept wavering back toward north over the small span.

埃莫里把一隻腳踩上新石板，它的重量讓中段石板下沉了一指，鬆開了底下的小石子。那顆石子滑過石面，落入水中，又撞上一根順流而下的枝條，枝條漂向岸邊的一朵黃水仙。被枝條吸引，小狗猛然跳起，在濕滑的邊緣打滑，撞上指示樁。衝擊使金屬牌旋轉起來；叮噹聲在松林小徑中迴響，直到札拉伸手抓住邊緣。她的手指按住冰涼的圓盤，但牌面仍在拇指與食指間顫動，在已完成的石橋上發出輕輕嗡鳴。她正穩住那塊牌子，而牌上漆好的箭頭依舊晃動，指向小橋上的北方。
