"My turn to cross." He shifted his feet onto the sun-warm stepping stone. A plastic lunch cup rested in his left hand; inside, a finger-sized toy clownfish bobbed among water and a mint leaf used as garnish. On the far bank, Orion raised a stopwatch, then folded his arms so no numbers were visible from here. The rope bridge breathed steadily, the hemp rails drooping toward the centre where thin moss left pale streaks. A drought-resistant shrub spread grey leaves beside the anchor post, its edges flickering silver in the breeze. Dashiel’s goal held two parts: reach the opposite stone fast and keep every drop inside the cup. He lifted a spare bamboo pole from the queue area, treating it as a light balancing staff, and stepped onto the first plank.

The planks dipped in slow waves, yet the pole let him keep rhythm. He pivoted his hips each time the bridge swung left, pressing the stick against the rope rail to steady the span and shorten the sway. Speed returned; Orion’s shoulders straightened as the stopwatch clicked. Midway, however, the staff occupied both hands and squeezed the cup awkwardly against Dashiel’s ribs. Water slapped the lid, a bead slipped through the straw hole, and the clownfish rocked hard enough to strike the plastic. Fixing the sway had been successful, yet that success shook precious cargo. A gust followed, rattling the whole frame; two more drops escaped and darkened a plank beneath.

Dashiel halted where the ropes dipped lowest. The knotting under his right palm curved like an elaborate plan drawn in rough hemp, offering loops large enough for fresh leverage. He pushed the pole into one gap, wedging it as a temporary brace; the bridge settled but no longer hurried. With his hand now free he centred the cup, then advanced in slower steps that left the stopwatch running longer while the water stayed mostly level. He reached the far stone, a final plank flicking upward behind his heel. Orion whistled without comment. Rope dust clung to the skin between Dashiel’s fingers, and faint grooves from the stick pressed against his forearm, prickling each time he flexed.
