The scoop, which had been balanced earlier on a wedge of chalk, fell, pinged against the stone floor, and slid through a thin film of whey until it tapped a stack of turning boards propped near the entrance. The boards creaked, releasing a puff of oak mustiness, and began to fan forward like slow dominoes. When the wheel sat quiet again, twin pale stripes crossed its bark-brown skin, and a last bead of diluted brine slid along the groove toward the shadowed aisle.
