Funnel Clog and a Quick Spill into the Basin -

English 原文
Arlo sat at a low table with Odette beside him at home. Small bowls of red, yellow, and blue sand circled a clear bottle. A plastic funnel rested in the mouth of the bottle, and a thin stick waited on the table. A shallow basin sat to the side to catch any extra grains. An awl lay near Odette’s leather pouch, and she slid it farther from his elbow. Fine grains swished in the bowls, and the cool glass touched his thumb when he steadied the neck.
He spooned red sand into the funnel, and a soft hiss slipped down the neck. Inside the bottle, the red spread and formed a small slope against the glass. He lifted the yellow bowl next and felt its fine edge tap his wrist. A loose thread on a mesh bag began to fray, and Odette rubbed it smooth with her thumb. The pause gave Arlo an opportunity to look along the side of the bottle. He chose a narrow space for the next band. He poured slowly, and the yellow settled neatly on the red.
A tiny clump then stuck at the funnel’s neck and held the flow. The stream stopped, and a few bright grains perched on the lip. He kept his hand still and watched the pile rest. Odette steadied the bottle, and he set a small square of mesh over the funnel. The grains that followed broke into a finer fall. When the clump loosened, a quick burst slipped past and tapped into the basin with a light patter. He smiled and pressed the thin stick straight down through the bands. The stick pulled little dots from every color and left a tight line from top to bottom. He turned the bottle just a hand’s width and found a surprise. On that side, the line sat between two bands like a tiny path. He added one more spoon of blue, and the last grains slid through the mesh and settled.

Story Discussion - Arlo and Odette
Sound: the sand made a soft hiss as it slid down the neck and a light patter when grains hit the basin, which helps you hear the movement. Touch: the cool glass against his thumb and the thin stick pressed through the bands suggest texture and careful handling. Sight: the red, yellow, and blue bands, the small slope of red sand, and the thin line between bands create a clear visual of the layered bottle.
Yes. The mesh broke the following sand into a finer fall, which loosened the clump and allowed the sand to flow again.
1) He poured yellow sand slowly and it settled neatly on the red layer. 2) A tiny clump then stuck at the funnel and stopped the flow. 3) They covered the funnel with mesh, the clump loosened, a burst of sand passed through, and he finished by adding blue until the bottle was filled and the sand settled.
He smiled because he felt pleased and a little surprised by the delicate result of his careful work; the neat line and the tiny path between bands gave him quiet satisfaction and delight.
red sand, yellow sand, blue sand
Story Discussion - Arlo and Odette (Close Observations)
Examples: “a soft hiss” — it makes you hear a gentle, continuous flow of sand down the neck; “slid down” / “slipped down” — it shows the sand moving smoothly along the glass; “settled” — it shows the sand coming to rest and forming a slope; “a light patter” — it gives the small sound of grains hitting the basin.
Yes. She moved the awl so it wouldn't accidentally bump his elbow and to keep the workspace clear and safe.
a quick burst slipped past; tapped into the basin with a light patter
1) The thin stick pulled little dots through every color band and left a straight line inside the layers. 2) When he turned the bottle a hand’s width, that line shifted into a position where it sat between two bands on that side. 3) Because of that angle and alignment, the narrow path became visible only on that face.
She is careful and attentive; she notices small details, wants things to be neat, and quietly helps to keep the work smooth and orderly.
Role Play - The Stuck Sand Moment
- •“The sand stopped—some grains are stuck at the funnel's lip. Can you hold the bottle steady while I place the mesh?”
- •“Your thumb feels the cool glass and you're choosing a narrow space. Which side should we pour the next color on?”
Role Play - The Little Path Discovery
學生分成兩人扮演 Arlo 與 Odette,練習用英文描述視覺細節(“a thin line between two bands”, “tiny dots along the line”)、請求暫時扶穩或轉動瓶子、提出建議(哪裡加藍色比較好)並表達驚喜和讚美。
- •“Look — the stick made tiny dots, and there's a thin line between these two bands. Do you see it?”
- •“Can you hold the bottle steady with one hand while I turn it just a little to check the other side?”
- •“I want to add one more spoon of blue. Where do you think I should pour so we don't blur the line?”
- •“What a surprise! Should we press the stick again to make the line clearer or leave it as is?”
