Kai adjusted the broad strap of his camera and stepped off the tram just as pale sunlight washed over the riverside marketplace. Stalls already lined the cobblestones, bright with marigold garlands and braids of dried corn; today marked the first day of the harvest festival, and every corner promised colour. Kai’s goal stayed simple: capture one strong picture for the community newsletter. His trainers tapped through puddles left by dawn washers, and he paused near a fruit pyramid, studying angles. A wind-lifted scarf crossed his view and fluttered away, leaving his planned frame empty.
A sonorous bronze bell rang from the council stage, signalling the opening dance. At the same instant a jostling torrent of visitors pushed past; elbows brushed his ribs, and the camera strap tangled around a wicker basket leaning against a stall leg. The knot pulled tight. Kai knelt, working the strap free, but the bell cadence slowed and the dancers already whirled away from centre. By the time he stood, the prime moment had drifted toward the rear stalls. He hurried after it, only to find the lane narrowed; crates of pumpkins now blocked the shortcut, workers rolling new produce into view.
Breath clouded against cooler shade as Kai detoured beside a cookware vendor. There, a kettle of hammered copper gleamed like molten sunrise. Its curved wall caught rolling images of cloth banners, children’s lanterns, and orange blossoms; the reflections twisted them into a single shifting collage. The kettle clearly waited for appreciation of its flawless polish, positioned on a low crate at chest height. Kai’s eyebrows lifted. He raised the lens, but a fresh complication arrived: battery warning in the corner of his viewfinder. One shot remained. He angled, focusing not on performers but on the kettle’s mirrored surface. In that oval he found an accidental composition—dancers brushing past candles, the bell tower tilting above fruit stacks, and his own silhouette framing the swirl.
The shutter clicked. A sudden gust spun a streamer across the kettle, adding a red streak into the captured light before the mechanism locked with a hollow clack: memory card full, battery spent. Kai lowered the camera, exhaled, and reviewed the image on the tiny screen. Crowd motion continued, unaware of his silent triumph; music drifted between stalls while vendors rearranged baskets for the late-morning rush. Across the stall, the polished kettle rested under steady afternoon light.
