The air held a warm, damp smell after a short drizzle, and bees circled the last open blossoms. A darker cloud gathered over the parking lot, and Reed quickened his steps; another drop might loosen the lids of the seed jars. The bird’s weight was light, yet its tiny claws found purchase; metal clicked; water roared through hidden pipes. Sprinkler heads along the beds spun without warning, and a thin mist swept the path. The sudden spray lifted dust, washed seeds from Reed’s open palm, and drummed on overturned pots. Reed blinked through droplets, arms raised to shield the trays balanced again against his chest.

The volunteers looked up, laughed, and jogged toward the control box. Before they reached it, the duckling jumped down, and pressure dropped; the sprinklers coughed once and fell silent. A silver sheet of water now coated the path, carrying cucumber seeds in slow spirals toward the compost tumblers under the fig tree.
