English 원문
Late afternoon light slanted across the community garden. Reed, carrying three shallow wooden trays, stepped from the greenhouse toward the storage shed. The air held a warm, damp smell after a short drizzle, and bees circled the last open blossoms. Ahead, a green mesh fence rattled; beyond it, weeds and tall grass formed a ragged frontier where the tended plots ended. A darker cloud gathered over the parking lot, and Reed quickened his steps; another drop might loosen the lids of the seed jars. He balanced the load with elbows out, boots making soft thuds on the path of compacted soil.
A sudden gust twisted down the corridor of trellised beans. Simultaneously, a sheet of plastic left to dry snapped upward and slapped his hip. Reed lurched; the trays tilted, and tiny cucumber seeds scattered like sand. At the same moment, a yellow duckling waddled from the frontier reeds, head bobbing, webbed feet slapping the wet ground. Reed bent low, palms sweeping damp soil to gather what he could. Nearby, two volunteers sorted stalks and wilted stems into different buckets; their steady work seemed to advocate the garden’s quiet habit of zero waste, yet no one noticed the loose seeds. Reed pinched grains between fingertips, but wind slipped through again and skated several into a shallow puddle beside the hose reel.
He reached for the hose to rinse mud from the gathered seeds. The nozzle felt gritty, and the lever stuck. The duckling pecked curiously at Reed’s boot, then hopped onto the metal footplate that controlled the main valve. The bird’s weight was light, yet its tiny claws found purchase; metal clicked; water roared through hidden pipes. Sprinkler heads along the beds spun without warning, and a thin mist swept the path. The sudden spray lifted dust, washed seeds from Reed’s open palm, and drummed on overturned pots. Reed blinked through droplets, arms raised to shield the trays balanced again against his chest.
The volunteers looked up, laughed, and jogged toward the control box. Before they reached it, the duckling jumped down, and pressure dropped; the sprinklers coughed once and fell silent. A silver sheet of water now coated the path, carrying cucumber seeds in slow spirals toward the compost tumblers under the fig tree. Inside the shed, Reed slid the trays onto a high shelf and folded the empty sack. A faint, earthy scent drifted upward from the soaked floorboards. Water pooled around the quiet trays.
