Dust drifted through a narrow shaft of light while Leo knelt beside the locked pantry door. The caregiver had been changing sheets upstairs, and no one else moved inside the quiet house. Leo’s palate still remembered the summer when a single spoonful of his grandfather’s cherry ice cream tasted brighter than fireworks. He had searched for that recipe all week; now only the freezer below the steps, described by his grandfather as the ultimate goal of every late-night raid, might hold a forgotten pint. The key turned halfway, then stopped. The latch had been painted over by several layers of thick white gloss.

Leo pressed his shoulder against the wood, yet the swollen frame refused to shift. If he had brought a screwdriver, the metal plate would have loosened at once. Instead, he slid a thin paint scraper between frame and door, pried slowly, and heard the old seal crack like ice on a pond. The door opened, but cold air rose from the stairwell and stiffened his fingers. He wished he had worn gloves. Shadows hid each step; his shoe brushed a jar, sending it rolling until glass tapped concrete below. He followed, blinking until the freezer’s green light shaped itself in the corner.

Frost clung to the lid, and the cord trembled with every compressor shudder. When the lid finally lifted, rows of small metal tins appeared, none larger than a teacup. Near the back, a single cardboard pint leaned sideways, partly buried under rime. Leo chipped it free, peeled the paper, and discovered deep orange sorbet, not cherry ice cream. He laughed once, scooped a spoonful, and citrus burst across his tongue while footsteps sounded above. The wooden lid rested beside the empty pint on the table.
