Grey light hung over the quiet street at dawn, and Lina knelt beside the cracked sidewalk. Winter rain has washed most color away, leaving only faint dots where hopscotch squares once lived. A cool breeze carried the smell of wet earth; somewhere behind the houses, a bird repeated a two-note cry. The small bucket that Lina carried rattled softly when she set it down. Her goal stood clear: repaint the game before her younger brother woke.

She pressed a towel against the stone, yet moisture stayed, and chalk dust slid off. Low light added fresh resistance; the first line was measured again, but the edge looked crooked. Lina switched plans. She held a short ruler as a roof while her spare hand dried one patch at a time. The work turned into silent teamwork between cloth, ruler, and brush. Halfway through, her fingertip scraped moss and revealed another layer—a row of paler squares, older and wider than she expected. Surprise paused her arms; someone had drawn a different pattern long ago, and a single mistake in spacing now explained the uneven ground. She adjusted, fitting her brighter marks inside the hidden outline instead of fighting it. When the sun finally slipped above the roof tiles, fresh blues and yellows lay neatly inside the ghost squares, and the bucket’s handle stopped moving.
