English 원문
Riley balanced a coil of thin rope on his shoulder while Evan carried a string of paper lanterns across the narrow courtyard. Maple, Riley’s beagle and steadfast companion, trotted beside them, nose twitching at every new scent. Their goal was clear: lift a lightweight canopy between two birches so afternoon light could filter through the colored paper. The plan had been sketched on a scrap of card that morning, and a folded booklet—an insightful guide to simple outdoor setups—peeked from Evan’s back pocket. Short delightful moments appeared whenever Maple tilted her head or tried to sample a fallen petal, yet the first toss of the rope slid back, caught by damp bark.
The boys fetched an old ladder, but one leg sank into soft soil and the frame listed sideways. Evan pressed a plank under the foot, and weight shifted; still, the highest branch stayed out of reach. Maple became an eager participant, pawing at the dangling lanterns and sending them spinning. The afternoon stretched into quiet bonding time, broken only by distant traffic and the dry rasp of leaves overhead. Cool air carried a faint smell of cut grass, and pale light flickered over the rough brick walls while a loose shutter tapped in a slow rhythm. When the rope snagged on a knot, Riley untwisted each fiber, then passed it carefully upward; the loop finally slipped over the branch and held.
They fastened the lantern string next, working in slow, careful pulls until pale globes lined the rope like low moons. A sudden breeze bellied the new canopy, folding patterns of light across Maple’s back; the dog froze, confused by moving color. One lantern near the middle tore free, drifted down, and landed upside-down inside a watering can. The rope above sagged, yet most of the line stayed firm, leaving an uneven arc that still caught the light. One paper lantern hung motionless above the dog’s tilted head.
