English 원문
By the time Fern reached the nearly empty platform, damp boot prints had darkened the concrete between yellow safety lines. A rolling drone from the tunnel vents blended with the metallic ring of the timetable board, so her own steps merged into the background pulse. The prints curved toward a bench where an elderly man, patriarch of a dozing family stretched across three plastic seats, released a rattling snore that matched the air-shaft rhythm. Fern paused; each heel mark looked smeared, as if the maker had dragged one foot. Even the bench vibrated with engine resonance, hiding any clue about how fresh the marks were.
An incoming announcement fizzed above her head, its vowels muffled by the speaker’s low quality, and she knelt for a closer listen to the floor. Sticky residue near one tile offered a quiet suction when she tapped it. The track of prints slipped past a vending machine, faded on the glossy tiles, then re-emerged inside the car that had opened for cleaning. A portable vacuum drummed inside, while a woman in patchwork trousers—perhaps a traveling quiltmaker between markets—matched the rhythm with a soft hum. Hazel specks of grit twinkled under the ceiling lights, settling along the aisle and covering parts of the trail. Fern crouched again, tracing the faint outlines, but the vacuum’s roar blew dust across them once more.
Departure tones echoed nearer. Fern chose to follow the marks again, this time sliding her wool scarf across the floor. The fabric soaked up the sticky layer, and a new shape appeared: not boot prints at all, but crooked letters formed by spilled ceremonial paint from a festival crate unloaded earlier. She laughed under the horn that signaled closing doors and kept wiping until the last curve of pigment showed a bright ribbon. She folded the stained scarf against her palm; behind her, the horn’s final note lingered.
