When Water Crossed the Bench-

English 원문
Fine grit scratched Vera's palm as she slid a half-finished pine panel across the bench. A shallow blossom had been carved in its center, petals circling a smooth hollow. She wanted the grooves clear before the final coat, so she began to gather the pale shavings into a tin dish. Each individual curl tumbled in silence, catching a faint blue-grey glow from the high window. The bench surface, darkened by years of sanding, held faint measuring lines beneath the dust. Beside her, a ceramic bowl filled with rinse water balanced on a narrow stool; the rim had been added earlier, and the bowl was ringed by a raised lip. Reed tapped a wooden mannequin nearby, its painted eyes still lacking any sign of consciousness.
Vera nudged the stool while shifting her elbow. The bowl tipped, and a cool sheet of water poured along the bench, following chisel marks like tiny canals. The stream met the tin dish, sent it spinning, and the shavings floated free. The fluid carried them toward the open drawer below; as the water struck, a muted utterance—an abrupt glug against trapped air—echoed inside the wooden box. The wet curls collected at the back, their weight sliding the drawer halfway out. Nails stored in the next compartment rattled forward, then scattered across the floor, tapping the stone tiles and rolling under the door that stood ajar. If another splash reached the sketchbook on the far end, the pencil lines would blur.
She crouched, pressed a cloth against the flowing edge, and wedged a leftover strip of leather under the stool to steady the bowl. The cloth soaked quickly and slowed the current; only a thin ribbon continued across the bench. With another rag she wiped the drawer runners before the wood could swell, then swept the scattered nails into a pocket. When she straightened, her gaze found the pine panel again. The surface that had been dust-dry minutes earlier now showed a wavering stain around the carved blossom. A pale trail of water kept inching along the grain toward the vise jaw.
