Dry paper edges scraped against Reed’s palms as he lifted a new ream from the supply cupboard. The cardboard sleeve felt grainy, and the sheets inside stayed cool and perfectly flat, almost pristine despite the faint dust that powdered the corridor shelves. A meeting-room timer blinked through the half-open doorway, so he hurried toward the printer area. Warm air drifted from the vent above, brushing his neck while fluorescent light flickered against the floor tiles. The printer casing, once glossy, now held a subtle film of office grime; the start button had been polished smooth by years of fingertips. Reed aimed to run fifty copies before colleagues gathered around the long oak table.
Bright rollers began to spin, yet the first sheet shuddered halfway through and folded upon itself. A groan of gears followed, then silence. Reed tugged, but the paper held fast, its crumpled edge wedged deep inside. He had been through jams before, though usually the tray cleared on a second feed. This time, the blockage felt stubborn. The feed rollers had been replaced last winter, yet their grip now faltered. He lifted the lid, ran his knuckles along the rubber track, and loosened stray fibers. Next, he fanned the stack, tapped it against the table, and fed the corners in reverse order. Still nothing—the warning lamp continued to glow. The maintenance guide had been misplaced weeks earlier, and no technician was due until tomorrow.
Leaning behind the machine, Reed unlatched the rear panel. Warm metal brushed his wrist, and a rush of trapped heat rolled out. Hidden against the inner casing sprawled a jungle of colored cables; lint clung to them like quiet undergrowth. Wedged between two wires lay something unexpected: a small marble, bright blue, probably rolled from someone’s desk months ago. Its smooth surface created a curious wedge that blocked the gears. He nudged it free with a plastic ruler, feeling the sphere glide across his skin before it dropped into his pocket. When he closed the panel and pressed start, the rollers accepted the paper without hesitation. A faint ridge remained along the final sheet on the output tray.
