He lifted the panel again, hoping it would glide into the narrow slot above the vice, yet the edge snagged against a stubborn ridge that felt like dried sap.

He set the panel aside, brushed away powdery curls of wood, and ran a chisel along the ridge. The surface grew even, but the board still refused to nestle in place. Cora stepped through the side door, palms dusty from mixing glue for a lavish picture frame. Without speaking, she balanced a battered baking sheet beneath the panel; its cool tin gave Joel a broader grip. Together they heaved, but the shelf pushed back. Something metallic scraped between wood fibres.

Cora’s fingers searched the seam and touched a cold lump. A forgotten gadget, no bigger than a watch spring, had been glued under a strip of veneer during assembly. Joel pried at the lump; brittle glue flaked away, grainy against his nails, until the gadget loosened and fell with a dull tap. Under the dried film, a tiny brass hinge appeared, edges still glossy. The panel now slid forward with gentle pressure, flush against the rails. Glue dust clung to the baking sheet in a thin crescent.
