A hollow clang rang along the station footbridge when a maintenance cart rolled over a loose grate. Zara paused beside the rail, shifting a canvas tote against her hip while a small brindle dog nosed at the brown tiles. The timetable board blinked amber behind her; two minutes remained before the evening bus. She dug for a coin, fingers brushing the prickly shell of a tiny sea urchin key-hanger she had bought last summer. Under the shell lay a smooth lump of limestone, taken from a cliff walk and now meant to anchor her lunch box. The dog’s tail flicked, and Zara crouched to clip the leash shorter. Another clang echoed—this time the cart struck the grate harder—and the sudden jolt rocked the footbridge floor just as she zipped the tote.
That shake tipped the tote sideways. The limestone lump slid first, knocking the lunch box against the zipper; the lid was flung open by the impact, scattering noodles and the bright carrot garnish across the metal slats. A coin bounced after them, rolled under the railing, and struck a row of stacked umbrellas belonging to a street vendor. The umbrellas toppled like slow dominoes. One handle clipped a suitcase that a commuter had balanced on its wheels; the suitcase spun, its edge pressing the dog’s leash clip. With a sharp snap the clip sprang free, and the dog bolted toward the downward escalator. An amazed gasp rippled among waiting passengers. Zara lunged, catching the flying leash just before the animal reached the first moving step. The suitcase kept rolling, but a bench leg blocked its path and the cascade finally eased.
Hours later, after the last bus had departed and cleaners finished their rounds, the footbridge lights dimmed to a soft amber line. A faint vibration from an idle vending machine hummed in the corner, but no steps crossed the tiles. Damp noodle strands clung to the railing, and the toppled umbrellas lay restacked against the wall, though one crimson canopy remained wedged beneath the bench. Its loose fabric fluttered toward the silent walkway.
