Grey carried a heavy box of chalk under one arm.

He walked toward the painted underpass near the river path.

Cool air moved through the dim tunnel.

He planned to draw bright shapes for the city walk.

The ground looked dry, yet a thin film of water lay there.

Grey stepped forward and felt his shoe slip across the floor.

The box flew from his fingers and burst open on contact.

Pieces spun away, tapping stones; one chalk rod hit a brick.

The brick shifted inward and revealed a palm-sized cave in the wall.

Luna rode her small bike behind him and stopped quickly.

She saw the rolling chalk and crouched to help gather pieces.

Grey knelt beside her; their knees pressed against cool concrete.

He used both hands to clutch the moving chalk before it escaped.

Luna reached into the new cave and pulled out a damp leaf.

A tiny frog came with the leaf and dropped onto the pavement.

It sat quietly, water shining on its smooth back.

Grey and Luna opened space for the frog to choose its direction.

The frog hopped twice and disappeared into a narrow drain.
