English 원문
Vera paused at the threshold, unnoticed for a moment, watching the master’s shuttle flick through the taut warp. Damp wool, iron from the loom’s bolts, and a faint sweet rot of old dyestuff mingled in the air. Rarely had the workshop smelled so sharp with alcohol and dye, and the contrast drew her closer. Near the beater hung a half-finished panel: an impala leapt across pale weft, its hind legs still only sketched in brown yarn.
What arrested her was the sudden sag in the middle warp; a whole morning of work risked drifting off line. If the cloth were any looser, the comb would bite through. She lifted a slim wooden wedge from the tool tray, meaning to raise the back beam slightly. Her fingertips stained, she guided the shuttle aside, yet the wedge altered the tension unevenly; the shed narrowed, and the shuttle almost jammed. At that instant, a small flask of deep crimson tincture, left uncapped on the side bar, tipped. Resinous fumes burst out as the liquid streaked across the leaping impala’s flank.
Threads now blotched, she reached for the nearest clean surface—a folded tablecloth on a stool—to blot the dye before it set. The cloth drank the tincture yet its coarse weave snagged a floating yarn, pulling the weft and worsening the skew she had tried to correct. Two problems tangled: remove the cloth and the stain would spread; leave it, and the pattern’s line would twist. Vigilance alone could not hold both threats apart. She loosened her grip, inhaled the hot scent of alcohol, and glanced at the dye’s slow creep; then, instead of scrubbing, she pressed the tablecloth evenly, fixing the stain into one controlled band.
Row by row she extended that darker band, letting the new shade run the cloth’s width, so the impala now bounded through evening shadow rather than daylight. The dense stripe offered quiet solidarity among colors that had been too bright before. Only when the last pick lay flat did she withdraw the wedge, allowing the warp to relax into a steadier line. Dust motes hovered above the frame as she folded the stained tablecloth onto the bench. A faint scent of alcohol lingered while the warp threads hummed on in the afternoon hush.
