Warm rubber flexed under Eli's sneakers, releasing a faint smell of sun-baked playground mat. Copper light fell across the equipment, and the swing seat glimmered like brushed brass; the seat had been polished smooth by years of use. Eli gripped the metal post as Sam drifted beside him, both eyeing the single moving seat. A smaller child coasted back and forth, dark hair lifting with each amber arc. Eli wanted that gentle flight; it was his afternoon goal. The seat, however, kept travelling, its chains rattling above the honey-colored mat. Eli’s commitment appeared in the steady way he remained near the post, but the gentle rhythm continued unbroken. Sam tapped the warm post, then pointed toward the sandbox across the ochre ground, hinting at another path while they waited.

Grains of caramel sand spilled over Sam’s canvas shoes as they reached the wooden frame. A multitude of plastic shovels lay scattered, yet the only wide sieve had gone missing. A biodegradable snack wrapper fluttered across the surface, catching on a splinter. Sam brushed it aside and spotted a shallow crate wedged beneath the rope net nearby. The box once carried oranges; gaps between its slats promised enough room for sand to pour through like rain. Dragging it left bright streaks on the rust-tinted planks. They filled the crate with sand, lifted, and watched coarse grains rain through the openings, shaping a small mound. The swing still moved behind them, the earlier obstacle unchanged, yet their arms kept working.

By the time their arms tingled, the child at the swing slowed. Eli set the crate down and hurried across the caramel mat, but another pair of feet beat him by seconds. The new rider wrapped fingers around the chains, pushing off before Eli arrived. Frustration tightened his shoulders; then Sam nudged the wooden crate beside him. Its upturned bottom formed an improvised seat. Eli lowered himself, the slats printing narrow lines on his legs. From there, he watched golden dust drift through sunlight while Sam traced circles in the fresh mound. Loose toys near the path remained a minor hazard for passing wheels, so Sam kicked them closer to the frame. A shallow dent remained in the sand where the crate had pressed.

等到手臂微酸，那孩子才慢慢停下鞦韆。伊萊放下木箱，飛奔過焦糖色墊面，可是另一雙腳搶先一步。新來的孩子握住鏈條，推向空中，伊萊只能止步。肩膀因懊惱而繃緊，山姆這時把木箱推到他身旁，翻過來的底面成了臨時椅子。伊萊坐下，板條在腿上壓出細痕。他從那裡看著金色灰塵在陽光中漂浮，山姆則在新沙丘上畫圓。通道旁散落的玩具對經過的小輪胎成了輕微絆腳危險，山姆便把它們踢回木框邊。木箱壓過的沙面留下一塊淺淺的凹痕。
