A ribbon of cloudy water slid down the side of a blue pail, sending a briny whiff through the aquarium aisle. A damp towel, edged with faint soap fragrance and the musk of dried feathers, draped over the rim and dripped in slow beads toward the tiles. Ella paused beside it, her nose picking up the metallic tang of pump bubbles and the dusty sweetness from grain bins nearby. Bird calls burst, then faded, while a pleasant hint of alfalfa floated out of the small-animal zone. She had already walked past rows of smoked-meat dog treats, yet this mixed smell held her longer, so she bent closer, expecting only cleaning water inside the pail. The surface looked opaque; a chalky crust ringed its top. Behind her, Theo stepped between glass tanks that exhaled cool, earthy air whenever bubbles surfaced, his sneakers squeaking across a damp patch left by the dripping rim.

Further along, two budgie cages rose above eye level, and a toasted, grain-rich smell seeped from their seed trays. One pale green bird slept on the highest perch, making a choice between it and its bright blue neighbor feel like a lost cause until both could be watched awake. A narrow step-stool had been taken by another shopper and now leaned near the reptile tank, its rubber feet giving off a vinegar-sharp trace where cleaning spray had dried. If the stool were free, observing the sleeper would be simple. Ella rose on tiptoe, chest brushing the wire, but the perch stayed hidden. Height remained the problem, even when she held the stretch longer a second time. She glanced at the pail, lifted it carefully, and felt husks sliding inside; no water at all—only dry seeds that released a warm, honeylike aroma when she tilted the bucket. Seed dust drifted upward; the green bird stirred, blinked, and spread one wing so a blue edge flashed. Ella tapped her shoe against a spilled seed now glinting on the tile.
