English 원문
"A sparrow just hopped in."
Reed turned, steadying a warm olive bowl between both palms before it could slide across the felt pad. Earthy heat from fired clay mingled with a metallic tang that clung to the tap-test corner, and the tiny bird cut through the dusty air as it fluttered once more along the window frame. Reed lifted the rubber mallet and tapped; the note came out half-ping, half-thud, as though spoken through powder. Nadia leaned closer; two neighbouring pieces touched, swallowing the vibration. She slipped a finger between them, and a chalky puff rose that smelled like ground stone after rain. A painted band circling the bowl spread wide as a small plaza seen from above, yet the puzzling sound lingered, so Reed tapped again with care.
From the inventory board, Ada called their names; the kiln fan answered with a sudden louder whir. Reed set the uncertain bowl down and followed Nadia across to the glaze reference shelf to compare a mislabeled colour tile. Vinegar-sharp dust coated every sample, and cool bursts from the fan swept the smell toward them. Behind their backs, the sparrow made a quick leap from the sill and pecked at stray crumbs with unexpected gusto. While Reed checked numbers with Ada, loose grit spun in the stirred air, and a pale blue flake drifted until it landed on the waiting bowl’s rim.
Reed returned first; the warm scent had faded beneath a musty glaze smell. The bowl that had been left alone carried one petal-shaped shard of glaze on its lip. He brushed it away, then struck the side with the lighter wooden dowel; a clear, ringing tone rose and hung above the mineral tang like a tiny bell. Nadia arrived and began to reminisce about a past batch fooled by dust, but her words paused when the sparrow chirped sharply. She placed the bright-sounding bowl back beside the mallet that had sat untouched during their absence.
