English 원문
"Hold the sketchbook," Gwen whispered.
Blue light pressed against her shoulders inside the coral observation window. She balanced a thin plastic caliper between two fingers, its edges smooth yet faintly gritty from dried salt. The branch behind the glass looked almost plumb, each knob thick as a coin, and she traced its width on paper while dampness beaded over her knuckles. A low hum vibrated through the metal bench; pumps beneath the floor kept water pushing upward, and bubbles brushed the inside surface like felt. A small fern in a planter near her knee dripped quietly, leaving cool spots on the tiles. Fog crept across the acrylic, softening the coral’s outline, but she wiped it with her sleeve and pushed the pencil onward.
A sharp chime burst from overhead speakers. Visitors flowed past, drawn toward the sea-turtle feeding rail. One heel bumped her bag; pencils rolled, and the caliper slid to the ground. At that moment Zane’s voice echoed from the touch-pool corridor, so Gwen stepped away, weaving through elbows and damp jackets. The corridor’s floor felt tacky, and air hung thick as wet cloth. While she waited beside her cousin, staff lugged a bucket of greens toward the turtles. Minutes later, crowd noise eased, and Gwen hurried back. The sketchbook lay open where she had left it, but pages had curled like thin wood left in rain. Light had shifted; now a deeper lamp above cast the coral as a darker silhouette, its edges longer and jagged.
She propped the book upright against the glass, pressing the spine until it sat plumb once more. Rather than erase the earlier outline, she angled her wrist and traced new shadows that hugged the warped page, letting the curl suggest fern-like polyps. The caliper tapped lightly, marking fresh measurements where the paper bowed. Graphite scratched over the raised ridges, catching on fibers swollen by moisture, until the new form blended with the old. A gentle vibration from the pumps traveled through the bench and into her fingertips.
