Erik, accustomed to peaches lined up in bright grocery aisles, squeezed beside Lena and reached toward the shade section, where the fruit felt cool and firm against his thumb. The moment the first peach left its crate, warm air stroked its chilled skin; a silver film of moisture bloomed and quickly made the surface slick. He rested the peach on the brass pan, but it glided across the metal like soap and tapped the chain, tipping the balance before any transaction could begin. Erik rubbed the pan with the edge of a paper bag, yet the dampness returned at once. Stray splinters of straw, looking as though blown in from some wilderness beyond the bustling stalls, clung to the wet metal. The sliding peach was now both a weight and a wandering brush loaded with droplets.

The next peach rolled onto the pan and stopped too high because the same straw threads had wedged under the pivot. Erik had tried to swipe them away, but the dry cloth only pushed the threads deeper. Behind him, the vendor shifted other merchandise, wood crates scraping softly. A faint clinking showed the scale still misreading, so Erik gave the pan a small tweak; the needle barely moved. His eyes fixed on the first peach: its damp skin held straw as firmly as burrs on fabric. Using that sticky cool surface, he dabbed along the rim, lifting each fragment until the brass felt smooth. The obstacle’s sheen now served as glue. When he lowered the pan again, the needle hovered level and the chain swayed in a slow arc. Lena guided both peaches into a fresh bag, the paper crackling while air escaped. Droplets kept sliding toward the centre of the cleared pan, tracing shining paths as the scale continued its gentle swing.
