She crouched on the dry bank, her boots with fading cheetah print pressing patterned ovals into the crumbly soil. The upstream face of each piece had been polished by many winters of flow, leaving glassy ridges easy to grip. The gap between the two anchored boulders still showed a hand-width of rushing space she hoped to close. She slid the first shale piece into the shallows, and cold water licked its smooth surface but kept swirling around. A thin plume rose behind the stone, proof of a partial gain yet far from sealing the channel. Cleo added a second slab, watching the plume narrow, though the water still brushed her glove in quick pulses.

She walked upstream to the driftwood pile, fingers closing around a pencil-thin branch whose bark already peeled like curled ribbon. Back at the gap, she slid the branch between the two shale layers, hoping to soften the remaining spray. Sunlight had shifted since lunch, and its warm glare now pressed on the exposed clay she had packed at the base earlier. Heat dried the outer skin of the clay; within minutes it shrank, opening a thread-thin crack. Water slipped through the crack, struck the waiting branch, and the sudden push knocked a pebble loose downstream. The rolling pebble tapped a resting dragonfly, a brief cultural exchange of stone and wing before the insect darted away. Cleo hurried for the shale outcrop again, thinking that if clay behaved like fusion cuisine, she needed a cooler ingredient.

She seized a wider slab, its edges still cool from shade. Lowering it over the crack, she felt water push, yet the weight slid an inch into place and held. With that final piece, the damp flow behind the dam rose only halfway up her boot and stopped climbing. Upstream, floating seeds gathered behind the new barrier like diners with refined palate, sampling still pockets instead of racing water. Downstream, the dragonfly circled once more, its wings skimming the surface where tiny rings kept spreading on their own. Between the paired boulders, a thin ribbon of current twisted through the narrow seam and rolled onward toward the pebbly riffle.
