English 원문
Reed lifted the taut kite line, and a silvery grasshopper burst from the grass, landing on the humming string. The insect’s hind legs began to tremble slightly, making the nylon quiver so that a quick jitter ran along the reel toward Nina, who stood a stride behind him. Pale light shimmered across the diamond kite above, its shadow sliding over steel-grey grass while cool wind pressed against their jackets. A cinnamon-scented breeze, passing over hidden gorse, mixed with the sharper smell of crushed stalks beneath their boots. Nina turned the plastic handle; the line emitted a faint hum, and the grasshopper clung on as though the string were a branch swaying in an unseen current. Reed had already sketched half the hillside in his notebook, pale shapes on blue paper, yet now he watched the small creature, noting each quick tremble.
When the next gust arrived, the line dipped behind them, brushed a thistle, and snagged. The sudden halt bent Reed’s wrist and pulled Nina two steps forward before they braced. The grasshopper remained, but the knot halfway up the string was being pushed hard against the thorns. Reed knelt, noticing how the weakened fibres had been gnawed thin where the creature sat; the damage stayed hidden until tension spread them open. Nina eased slack from the reel, yet the handle jammed where loops had overlapped earlier. She handed Reed the drum, stepped to the thistle, and lifted the trapped line over the prickles. As her fingers pinched a fresh knot above the frayed strip, the kite sagged, then caught a steadier breeze and climbed, its fabric giving one low flutter that matched the faint quiver still running through the string.
High overhead the diamond steadied against a patch of pale sky. At the same moment on the lower slope, a blackbird shot from a shadow and folded itself into the blue-grey trees without noticing the coloured fabric above. A fresh gust sent ripples across the silver-tinged grass around the stone bench. Nina lowered the reel onto the flat surface, guiding the freed string away from the quivering grasshopper.
