A sun-warmed stone bench, a plastic reel, and a bright diamond kite lay on the hill’s amber crest. Lyle aimed to keep the kite high while standing beside the bench where steady footing outweighed the direct wind. The reel had been packed in the morning; its handle already showed caramel scratches from earlier flights along this slope. He pulled line smoothly until a sudden jam stopped the drum and the humming string slackened like a dulled guitar. His earlier assumption that the handle would spin all afternoon cracked at that moment, and the kite began to sink. Lyle took quick steps backward, trying to squeeze out the crossed loop by tugging hard and snapping fresh slack onto the reel.

The loop eased, yet a batch of coils slipped loose again and jammed once more, forcing him toward the bench for leverage. By the time he freed the mechanism, the kite hovered only metres above the grass, wings twitching under a weaker ochre gust. A stronger blast returned, lifting the kite sharply; the thin line whistled over a thistle beside the grassy pathway down the slope. Tension bit into Lyle’s fingers and dragged the string tight around the plant, locking the kite at an awkward copper angle. Jude, sketchbook still open on a blanket nearby, noticed the snag and, without speaking, took the initiative to brace the reel.

With both hands free, Lyle trotted toward the thistle, grass brushing his boots and the kite yanking above like a kite-eating bird. He raised the stem, flicked the line over its prickles, and felt the pull straighten as the kite caught a honey-light gust. A snap echoed; the weakened fibres near the old knot stretched into feathery strands, yet the line held after a brief shiver. Lyle reeled in several arm-lengths, trimming the damaged section, and Jude loosened his grip once the tension evened again. If the wind swung suddenly, they would repeat the dance; for now the kite angled higher, painting a rust trail across sky. Thin white fibres, squeezed from the knot, clung to Jude’s fingers and dusted the bench where the reel had scraped stone.
