"The big shovel is stuck," Greta called. She knelt at the sandbox rim; glare from the metal slide striped her forearms with broken light. Atlas crouched opposite, yet every joint pull sank the blade deeper under the ridge of compact sand. The warm plastic handle slipped in Greta’s gritty grip, and bright grains scattered across shadowed wood. A smaller plastic sieve had been left half-buried, its rim forming a pale circle beside their knees. A swing behind them drifted, sending a moving silhouette over the rubber flooring with each faint peak.

Greta brushed sand from her shorts and stepped into a slanted shaft of light crossing the playground. At the fountain, the stiff button had been held down by Atlas; water arced upward, catching glare before splashing into the grate. Greta cupped the stream, cooling her palms, while reflected gleam danced across the underside of the spout. They wandered toward the climbing frame where rope knots glowed under direct sun, yet the platform below hid in pooled darkness. Atlas crossed first; Greta paused to contemplate the woven pattern, testing alternate lines until her balance matched his rhythm. A bicycle bell beyond the low fence flashed a brief ring, echoing along the urban trail skirting the trees. The pair had started their evening stroll there earlier, noticing the playground’s late-day vibrancy spreading like bright paint across surfaces. Behind a bench, a thin mantle of shade pooled, while the exposed slats shimmered with stored heat against their calves.

Returning along a lengthening shadow, they reached the sandbox without planning to stop. A small dump truck had rolled from someone’s pile and now idled at the crest of a sandy incline. Atlas nudged the truck; its wheels caught sunlit ridges, gained speed, and bumped the half-buried shovel handle. The jarred handle pressed against the wooden frame, splitting the packed ridge; freed sand slid, tilting the blade upward. Greta lifted along that new angle, and the shovel rose with ease, light tracing its curving edge. If Greta had gripped the handle the same way earlier, the shovel would have slipped free at once. Fine sand murmured down the blade, trickling toward the darker hollow under the frame.
