Otto’s trainers squeaked as he shuffled closer to the curved metal handle. The seesaw dipped, sending a dull thud through the rubber bumper beneath Jarvis’s end. The plank had been sanded smooth by years of sliding shoes, yet shallow ridges still pressed against the backs of Otto’s legs. Heavier by several kilograms, Jarvis had been drifting downward like a slow lift, while Otto dangled above the scuffed landing zone. A playhouse painted to look like a tiny cottage stood near the sandbox. A black dog napped in its shade while a gathering of pigeons pecked nearby. Otto’s shift pushed extra weight outward and the plank lurched. His knee nudged a plastic fishing rod that rested against the fulcrum post. The rod slid down the warm wood, dropped onto the sand border, and rolled until its tip tapped Jarvis’s water bottle. The bottle clinked, tipped, and began to spin beneath the sun-hot plank, threatening to wedge against the bumper during the next descent.

Jarvis shifted his weight to grab the rolling bottle, and the lighter end shot upward, making Otto’s shoulders jolt. The plank rocked once more; sand sprinkled from Otto’s outsole and trickled toward the fulcrum like dry rain. A cracked clam shell hidden in that sand rattled downhill, bounced off the steel pin, and skidded onto the shadowed landing zone. The impact startled the resting dog, which rose stiffly and padded aside, bumping Otto’s calf with a cold nose before lying again. Beyond the fence, an old red warehouse framed the scene, its tin roof flashing whenever the plank angled to catch the sun. Jarvis inched toward the fulcrum; if he moved nearer the centre, the plank would hover longer. He seized the spinning bottle just before it jammed. Lowering it to the ground reduced weight and steadied the beam. The seesaw now hovered almost level, the squeak replaced by a faint hum that rose and fell. Fine scratches zigzagged along the plank where the bottle cap and their soles had dragged. A single grain of sand spun away from the fresh groove, twirling toward the shadow under the fulcrum.
