Wyatt, a young scientist with a backpack of small tools, crouched so the low glare outlined each ridge of the impression. Thin moisture glimmered inside the print, while the surrounding gravel already lay dry and dull. Above him the gazebo’s wooden framework filtered brightness; narrow slots tossed stripes of shadow across the boards like ladders. It had been raised on short pillars, and a dim strip glowed beneath the floorboards. Beyond the railing, children playing leapfrog burst from tree shade into a wide shaft of light, then ducked out again. Farther off, a grassy knoll caught direct sun and threw back glare that separated it from the darker pond edge.

A cloud slid over the sun, and the spacious lawn fell into dim relief under new, flat light. The first drops struck the roof quietly, but darker discs soon dotted the path, widening faster near the gazebo’s open side. Wyatt noticed water gathering where the path dipped, blocking a straight walk toward the knoll he had marked earlier. He judged the stretch at three long strides; stepping through would soak the sensitive notebook sheets buried in his pack. He rolled a flat edging stone from the fountain rim and slid it into the shallow margin of the new pool. The gap shrank, yet an arm’s length of dim water still reflected the bench lights in restless patterns. Next, he dragged another stone, equally wide, and eased it beside the first, but a shoe-width void remained.

A smaller block rested nearer, half lost in railing shadow; he lifted it, water slipping in thin ribbons underneath. Placing this third piece closed the line at once, the surface now offering three full foot-pads of pale stone. For a breath nothing moved, then a faint ripple stilled as the stones took the load without sinking. Wyatt stepped across them in quick sequence, almost like leapfrog, and reached the rising grass of the knoll untouched by puddle water. Light broke through a tear in the cloud, spilling sideways and drawing bright outlines beside deep hollows. He compared the fresh ground to the earlier print, pressed his worn boot alongside, and saw identical edges catch the glare. Wyatt lifted his foot again, and the soft clap of dripping soil lingered in the shaded air.
