English 원문
The hanging scale drifted left and right in the harbour wind, but the heavy crate on the ice box stayed perfectly still. Grant stood beside Fern at the weighing station, palms tingling from the cold granite platform, while a fog of melting ice curled around their boots. Water dripping off the crate’s corners threatened to soak the remaining ice, and the lid beneath could not swing shut. Their quest was simple: raise the crate high enough to free the lid before the tide fell two more marks. Grant took a short pry bar from a toolbox, its steel shaft rough with scratches, and eased it under one edge. Fern pushed a narrow wooden shim beside the bar. The crate lifted a finger-width—one small increment—but the lid still rubbed against its base.
In Grant’s perception the crate barely shifted, yet vapour rose faster through the open gap, urging another try. They tackled the other side next: the bar slid under, Fern added a second shim, and the crate rose again, the fibres of the wet rope handle creaking as weight redistributed. Still, the lid scraped the rim. A thin strip of rubber lay near the drip tray by the fuel pump; Grant fetched it, folded it twice, and jammed it beside the first two wedges. With that third addition the crate lifted just enough, and the lid dropped silently, trapping the swirling mist inside. A small discovery followed—the rubber strip had pinned a loose mooring rope that had been slipping toward the scale pan, preventing a future tangle.
Fern pulled the pry bar clear, and the three makeshift wedges held firm against the crate’s damp underside. Their combined effort had been passive to outsiders, yet the sealed box would slow the ice melt until an adult could move the load. Both watched the painted tide ruler; the water line hovered, unchanged for the moment. Thin mist from the ice drifted between them, cool against Grant’s skin. A faint chill brushed his fingertips long after the work stopped.
