Pierce pushed the coral window’s magnifying panel forward, aiming to bring a branching coral into sharper view. The metal frame had been warmed by the overhead spotlight, and his palm skimmed the smooth surface with less grip than he expected. The panel slid farther than intended; its arm bumped the rack of laminated species cards. Plastic edges rattled against each other, and one card sailed free. It skimmed the damp tile in a tiny arc, then shot beneath the bench where his grandparent sat reading, the scrape making nearby visitors gather in surprise. Inside the tank, a ribbon of bubbles unravelled toward the light, their faint pop lost under the sudden clatter.
Leaving the coral window behind, Pierce followed the layered hum that filled the jellyfish corridor. Cylindrical tanks glowed violet, and the pump inside each one changed pitch whenever a bell-shaped jelly brushed the intake shield. His younger sister counted the drifting shapes, while their parent photographed shifting stripes beyond the glass. A public-address speaker tried to communicate a revised feeding time that had been announced earlier, yet the words blurred into metallic echo between walls. Schools of silver fish in the overhead tunnel appeared to orchestrate tight spirals whenever the announcement’s bass thumped, and the handrail vibrated softly as the crowd flowed past. If the corridor lights dimmed again, he would already be near the exit. At the postcard rack near the doors, he spun the carousel once; its squeak rose, fell, and blended with water dripping from the wash station.
Circling back toward the coral exhibits, Pierce noticed the panel still hanging askew, half blocking the bench. No one stood at the window now, and a steady drip tapped near the fallen species card. He placed two fingers close to the cool hinge instead of the broad frame and eased the weight upward; the motion stayed quiet, and the rack merely whispered. The laminated card fluttered on a stray draft, glided against his shoe, and slid to a halt beside the bench leg, ending the earlier chain. A faint creak persisted along the metal arm, the slowly fading tone drifting deeper into the corridor.
