The cylinder-shaped desert model was still, but Luke’s fingers tipped a plastic scoop of sand through its side hatch. He wanted a sharper ridge for his quick sketch on the easel nearby, so the first scoop slithered down the miniature slope and formed a neat dune under the magnifying dome. The fan hidden under the base started its low hum, an overture that pushed a gentle draft across the grains. Luke leaned closer; his shoulders grazed the cool glass, and the graphite clip on his paper squeaked as he shifted weight from one foot to the other.
The ridge looked thinner than the photograph on the information plaque, so he added a second scoop. The new layer slid over the first and left a lumpy shoulder that broke the airflow pattern. Fine grains began lifting in loose spirals. Thinking his contribution too small, Luke slid a third scoop inside. The heap rose like a tiny hill, blocked the central vent, and the motor responded with a sharper whine. Air diverted sideways, struck the slope’s edge, and a swirling sandstorm burst upward. Static electricity sent light grains through a gap around the dome, and specks drifted onto the easel; the paper flexed under their sudden weight. Visitors in the corridor paused as the hum deepened, and one rope barrier shivered when the redirected air brushed past it.
Luke braced his elbow against the stand, reached through the hatch again, and pinched away the middle scoop in one quick pull. The smaller load dropped into a tray below, leaving a cleaner channel. Air flowed straight again; the swirling slowed, and loose grains slid back into a gentler curve. He brushed the scattered dust from his paper with the side of his hand, then angled the easel backward until the sheet stopped wobbling. Inside the cylinder, a palm-sized model jeep crawled along its narrow track, tyres ticking over fresh grains toward the far wall.
