Golden light had already stretched across the sandbox rim when Cole lowered the metal sieve onto the pale surface. The tool had been borrowed all morning, and a faint coppery gleam still marked its wire mesh. Cole aimed to sift fine sand for a smooth tunnel roof; Ada, beside him, packed a bucket to shape rounded towers. A gentle breeze pushed single grains against their ankles while the wooden frame stored afternoon heat. Ada scooped a heap toward the sieve, making clear with a raised eyebrow that she needed it soon. Cole nodded, lifted, and shook. Dust fell in amber curtains, adding a soft hush to the usual chain clank from the swings behind them. A darker seam appeared beneath the top layer, lending intrigue to the flat expanse, and a nearby toddler—busy with a bright shovel many children adore—paid no attention.

Cole slid the sieve across to Ada just as the shovel clatter paused. She pressed damp sand through the mesh, yet thick clumps stuck fast; the hidden moisture became the obvious cause of the blockage. Ada tapped the rim, then waited three heartbeats before tilting, letting gravity ease the weight free without bending the fragile wire. Cole used the pause to carve a doorway; their timing adjustment meant neither lost momentum. If Cole had kept shaking, the clumps would have cracked his new arch, so he leaned back until Ada finished. She returned the sieve, and he copied her slower rhythm. Together they formed two adjoining chambers, each wall streaked honey-brown where wet sand met dry. A gust lifted stray grains onto the rubber mat, but the structures held.
