Zara peeled a length from the crinkled roll and pressed it around a corn cob, feeling smooth metal warm beneath her thumbs. Behind them the sealed earth kiln breathed thin clouds of steam, each wisp twisting above pale blocks where fine cracks had opened. On the bench nearby, a soft cinnamon roll waited on a small tin plate today. Sticky caramel glaze held tiny brown flecks of cinnamon and several scattered anise seeds lightly. A stoneware mug of cool cider stood beside it, beads of moisture gathering on the outside. The farm cat, drawn by the sugary smell, climbed silently onto the wooden bench top. Its whiskers quivered, nose inches from the pastry, while Zara turned back toward the mound.

The cat gently nudged the tin plate nearer the mug on the bench today again. The tin rocked, and the mug toppled onto its side, sending liquid toward the edge. Cider splashed across the bench, ran down a leg, and soaked the loose soil beside the kiln. The damp patch darkened quickly, turning gritty earth into slick clay under late afternoon light. Pressurized steam inside the mound found the weakened spot and hissed out in sudden relief. The vapor blew a thin jet that pelted the cat’s flank with warm droplets firmly. The sudden spray launched the animal into a dash across the stomping circle, brushing Zara’s calf before darting on. Its shoulder clipped the wooden rake propped against a stone and tilted it toward ground. The handle swung down, struck the side of an iron bucket, and the bucket tipped. Dry soil poured in a thick sheet over the steaming crack, covering the soft clay and muffling the hiss.

Zara steadied the bucket before it emptied completely; only a low plume slipped through the new layer, then faded. Fine grains kept dropping, filling tiny gaps between blocks and forming a rough plaster where the cider had soaked the wall. Steam now rose in gentler breaths through higher vents, and the surface under Zara’s hovering palm felt evenly warm again. She stepped back, brushing specks of earth from her sleeves with slow deliberate motions today. Nearby the cat crouched at the field edge, licking damp fur and eyeing the patched mound from a safe distance. At the same hour, two sparrows on the farmhouse gutter knocked loose a stripe of dust. The drifting powder danced toward the kiln and swirled slowly above the quiet clay surface.

莎拉扶正鐵桶，沒讓土全倒光，只剩微弱蒸氣穿過新土層後便消散。細灰仍在落下，填滿泥塊間的縫隙，在蘋果酒濕過的牆面形成粗糙補丁。更高處的通氣縫吐出平緩蒸氣，莎拉懸空的手掌上方再次感到均勻溫度。她退後幾步，慢慢拍落袖口土屑。田邊，貓蹲著舔濕毛，遠遠觀察補好的土堆。就在同一時刻，農舍屋簷上的兩隻麻雀啄落一條灰塵。那股粉末朝窯飛去，在靜靜的泥堆上方緩緩旋舞。
