English 원문
Muddy half-moon prints dotted the top slab of the weir, darker than the stone and still glossy with water. They proved Keane had reached the channel ahead of York and was already crouching near the irrigation fork with his marked stick. York’s rubber-boot soles squeaked on the slick stone as he joined him and pushed one swollen sluice board upward. Damp wood grated against the groove, and colder water rushed past his shins toward the wheel. The paddles clapped yet turned only lazily, and the slender speed-indicator stick barely even nodded. Leaves floated free after a few strokes with the blunt rake, yet the sluggish rhythm stayed the same. York ran a thumb along a sanguine smear of iron algae on the axle today. Even his careful intuition could not explain why so much force had vanished from the turning wheel. Somewhere beside the board, a green frog surfaced, its plight hidden under drifting twigs until the sudden flow uncovered it.
A sharp gust flipped open Pearl’s sketchbook at the tool area, tearing loose two pages that skated toward the garden path. York dashed across the gravel after them, catching one curling sheet against a damp wall. He pinned the other beneath his elbow before the wind could urge it into the water. On returning, the small cork float Keane used for depth readings now spun in stubborn circles midway between fork and wheel. The swirl’s tenacity was suddenly clear; extra flow poured past, yet the wooden paddles still lagged. York lowered himself, letting cold fingers trace the smooth hollow that tugged at the current. A quick glance to the rake and to a spare flat stone in the bucket offered two answers.
Keane stood a step aside, head tilted and lips pressed together, while York slowly weighed his two visible options. The long rake offered distance, yet the hollow lay deeper than its bent tines could touch. The flat stone beside the bucket, however, matched the gentle curve along the base of the depression. He knelt, water soaking the knees of his trousers, and eased the stone into the flow. The current tried to twist it from his grip, vibrating against his palms like a live rope. Little by little, the swirl loosened; the wheel’s stick began wobbling faster, droplets striking his sleeve. A startled bronze dragonfly suddenly lifted off the frog’s smooth head and flashed away over the glimmering spray. York kept pressing the flat stone into the shifting hollow while the frog clung to the edge of his boot.
