Luke slid the tool across the sandbox edge, and glare leaped from its handle into Nell's squinting eyes. They aimed to build a tall tower while keeping a tunnel clear for a toy car beneath it. Dry grains kept slipping away, casting sharp shadows that stretched toward the fence whenever a passing cloud dimmed the sun. Nell filled the green bucket at the fountain, pressing hard until the stiff spring released a thin sparkling stream. She returned, poured the water slowly, and the sand darkened, binding itself like damp silt around the forming walls. A distant speaker broadcast music from the open plaza beyond the fence, but the notes faded under children’s louder shouts.

The tower finally stood, its sides catching bands of brightness, but the tunnel mouth began to fracture along one corner. The tunnel roof had been shaped earlier with a sieve, yet it now drooped in the new dampness. A blackbird hopped onto the wooden rim, its silhouette crisp against the slide's glare, and its weight shook loose more grains. Sand flowed inward, blocking the shallow passage, so the toy car lay buried, glinting once before darkness pooled around it. Nell grabbed a flat stick lying nearby, planning to extend the tunnel roof and push the fallen sand aside. She raised one hand to steady the tower, yet that squeeze sent a narrow crack racing upward until the peak turned jagged. Accepting the trade, she slid the stick under the roof, letting some grains drop while the car’s pathway reopened enough to roll.

Hours later, the playground fell quiet, and evening light angled low through tree gaps, leaving long bars of dimness across the sandbox. No children climbed the frame now; the rope net hung motionless, and the slide reflected a pale stripe of the sinking sky. Beside the wooden rim sat the stick, half buried, and the tunnel entrance gaped narrower than before, but still passable. Only the jagged ridge of the shortened tower remained, a soft shadow tracing its uneven line against the quiet timber frame.

幾小時後，遊樂場靜了，傍晚的光從樹隙斜射，沙坑上留下長長暗帶。沒孩子再爬架，繩網不動，溜滑梯反射出天空最後的淡痕。木框旁的木條半埋著，隧道口比先前窄，但仍能通行。縮短後的塔峰鋸齒狀突起，一道柔影沿不平的線條貼在安靜的木框上。
