The next release sent the marble racing, but halfway a soft thud revealed it had bounced through a sudden gap. Footsteps in the hallway had loosened old tape, so two adjoining tubes separated and spilled the glass sphere onto warm carpet. Examining the spot, Tatum noticed a damp hollow where repeated runs softened the cardboard, meaning the whole mid-section begged for overhaul. He slid a wooden platter from the table, balanced the sagging tubes across it, and added a square block beneath. A fresh strip of tape, pulled tight, held the joint while he sighted along the ramp to check each stretch. If the angle were any sharper, the marble would leap clear, so he nudged the platter until the sphere rolled without wobble.
