English 원문
A stack of shallow wooden basins, a cold granite slab, and a broom with straw bristles rested beside the rolling table halfway down the terrace. Thin weeds grow up between the ochre-stained stones at Emmet’s feet, and the sunlight on the slope paints every surface a muted honey tone. The leaves he carried from the withering shed show uneven colour; some tips still gleam bright, others already lean toward amber. Leaves had been spread on upper and lower racks, yet the warm air rose and created a sharp variation in moisture. Emmet taps a basin; a charcoal worker had been kind enough to leave a palm of water inside. Hoping to soften the driest cluster, he flicks droplets across the pile. The granite, warmed by constant use, releases a steam thread that smells of cut grass and toasted grain.
Water gathers at one corner, escapes the table edge, and begins a narrow run down the slope. The shining stream hugs a groove worn by decades of footsteps, looking almost aquatic as it curls past stray leaves waiting for the oxidation room. If the trickle reaches that room, the extra humidity will darken the batch too fast. Emmet leans forward; his elbows tighten and small beads form on his brow. He presses the broom handle against the groove, but the straw is too loose and the water pushes through. He tries again, sliding the damp cloth that once lined a basin under the handle, wedging the bundle against the stone. The cloth swells, blocks the flow, and water diverts toward a side gutter carved for rainy mornings. Kay lifts her stopwatch in the doorway and notes the pause without comment; the oxidation timing holds. A faint frost scar on one leaf catches the sun, still visible from an earlier cold dawn yet harmless to flavour. Satisfied that leaf quality remains steady, Emmet lays the broom across the terrace wall, and the last trickle slips along its underside toward the gutter.
