English 원문
A faint breeze had been slipping through the yard door since sunrise, and Lark pressed a pine board against the vice clamp on the drying shelf, feeling the grain scratch his palms. The adult instructor hammered softly at a horseshoe on a bench anvil nearby, while Hugo the studio cat crouched under the worktable, nose twitching at drifting sawdust. Lark aimed to carve a shallow dish that would later become the base of a wooden platter, so he chalked a wide circle. Before the first cut, a gust pushed harder. Gritty flecks lifted, covered the circle, and left only a blurred mark where the guide line had been.
He set the saw down and reached for fresh chalk, but the breeze carried the loose sawdust farther; it poured like dry water across the table, slipped off the edge, and dusted Hugo’s whiskers. The cat bounded sideways, bumped a half-open glue bottle, and a clear ribbon dribbled onto the floorboards. That thin stream crept under the plank and coated the underside, making it stick to the clamp jaw. Lark tried to lift the board; it held fast, the surface cool and tacky against his fingertips. More wind whirled in, rattling sandpaper rolls in the supply corner and sending them rolling toward the instructor’s bench.
The rolling sheets slowed against worn floor ridges, yet the open door promised another swirl. Lark leaned down, slid the studio’s door wedge aside, and dragged the small anvil across the boards until its weight blocked the gap. Airflow dropped at once. Sawdust settled onto the ground instead of the table, and the glue bottle stopped tilting. He peeled the board free with a steady pull, then redrew the circle so the line lay sharp and unbroken. A slow drip of glue slid toward the floorboards, stretching thinner with every heartbeat.
